Did you know that? A single litre of used cooking oil down the drain is enough to contaminate 1000 litres of water. In addition to causing clogging in the pipes, used edible oil causes bad odours.
The hotel and catering sector produces a large quantity of used frying oil. Aware of this impact, we at the Louvre Hotel & Spa have been transforming used cooking oil into household soap for several years.
For your information, soap is the product of a chemical reaction between fat and caustic soda. Each litre of oil produces 850 grams of soap. For the Louvre Hotel & Spa, the transformation into soap is done by cold saponification. Nothing very complicated, just mix water with the caustic soda before pouring the oil. The success of this process obviously depends on the precision of the quantity of soda used. Glycerine soaps are the result of this method. They will be used internally or distributed to staff. The household soaps produced will thus be used internally or distributed to our employees.
The recycling of frying oil is a matter of course for us in the pursuit of our CSR approach.
